The shooting at the Kansas City gun store where six people were killed and another four wounded, which left three people dead and seven in custody, was the second mass shooting to occur in the state in two weeks.
It was also the deadliest since October at the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater, where a gunman opened fire on a crowd of 50 people, killing 12 and injuring more than 70.
The shooter, James Holmes, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of 12 and the wounding of 70.
“The world is still healing from the tragedy in Aurora, and we are hopeful that this tragedy will not bring back those who died in that horrific theater,” Kansas Governor Sam Brownback said in a statement.
He added: “We will continue to work with law enforcement, community leaders, and our lawmakers to keep our communities safe.”
The victims of the shooting included three women and one man.
In a statement, Kansas State Police said: “The suspect was found deceased on the ground in the parking lot of the business.
His car was located a short time later.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.”
The shooting occurred just a few days after the fatal shooting of four people at a Black Lives Matter protest in St. Louis.
Police said the suspect, a black man, shot and killed a white man who was holding a handgun, but the man later died of his injuries.
