The state’s newest gun-free zone is about to take effect.
The Virginia Beach City Council approved a resolution Monday night that allows anyone over the age of 21 to openly carry a gun anywhere in the city without a permit.
It also allows gun owners to openly use any of the city’s seven designated shooting ranges.
Council members said they were responding to public concerns about the number of shootings at the nearby Virginia Beach Military Academy.
A new law banning guns in Virginia beaches is set to go into effect Jan. 1.
If it passes, all guns must be stored in locked containers.
