Virginia Tech shooting: Five dead, 14 injured

Five people were killed and nine others were wounded in a shooting in Virginia Tech, the school said.

The victims were identified as Nicholas McGavin, 25, a student at the school; Cody Smith, 22, who was an employee of the school’s Office of Information Technology; Andrew C. Smith, 24, who worked at the university; and David M. Meeks, 27, who also worked at university-owned facilities.

The Virginia Tech community is on edge after the shooting, which took place near a parking lot where students work, said university President Christopher W. Cox.

“It’s been a very sad week in Virginia,” he said.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that this is the start of a new cycle.”

Cox said the school has been working to identify the victims and determine their identities.

The victims included two students, two faculty members and a former student, according to a statement from the university released on Friday evening.

The school also issued a statement about the incident, saying it was the first known incident of violence in the campus since November.
